I am usually asked several questions in regards to our sport whenever I get into a conversation with someone who isn’t aware of our team, or just about Rugby in general. Two injured in auto accident Wednesday evening
Approximately, 6:00 pm Wednesday, the Mason City Police Department and Fire Department were dispatched to Westview Dr. and 1st St NW for a two vehicle accident. A Jeep Cherokee and a Chrysler Town & Country had collided causing injuries.

Walking bridge gets some needed repairs

River City's Dames of Anarchy's First Roller Derby Bout was a Hit
Who would have expected the spectacular turnout the River City "Dames of Anarchy" had Saturday night for their first bout? A half hour before it was to start, The All Season Building at the Fairgrounds were bringing out more chairs and decreasing the size of coach/player area to make more room for the fans. Two men say councilman-elect Alex Kuhn threatened them Thursday night
NorthIowaToday.com was contacted by two Mason City men late Thursday evening and Friday morning who say that councilman-elect Alex Kuhn threatened them. They say the incident started when Kuhn became annoyed at jokes one of the men was telling in a downtown Mason City bar Tuesday night. One man wrote his account out in an email and sent it to our office.

Kuhn, Marinos and Lee win seats on Mason City City Council
Alex Kuhn won a convincing victory in the at-large city council race in today's city elections, taking home 3919 votes, or 74.4%. Kuhn, pictured above, said he looks forward to "working hard with fellow council members to enhance our communities' strengths while correcting our weaknesses." Max Weaver will be off the city council, losing to former mayor Jean Marinos. John Lee won in the 1st ward, edging Tim Latham.

It was a cool, crisp Saturday morning in Clear Lake for the fourth annual Turkey Trot 5K. The sign says "Est. 1891." The other one says "sorry we're closed." It seems that a fixture in the Mason City greenhouse business, Krieger's Garden Center, has closed their doors, possibly for good.

The Mason City Zoning Board of Adjustment heard a request from Creative Energy Systems Tuesday night, asking for a conditional use permit for a proposed $35 million waste to gas plant. Citizens showed up to argue for and against the permit and the project. The board postponed their ruling until a later date. Mason City gives itself a deserved pat on the back
The Vision Iowa Project in Mason City is officially complete. The work is finished, final payments to the contractors are OK'd and Certificates of Recognition were bestowed upon those that made it happen. New business owners in Mason City say working with City Hall frustrating
There's a saying, "You can't fight City Hall." Apparently, you might not even be able to work with them in Mason City. Jake Prazak and John Berding (pictured, above) recently opened N.I.P. and Fitness in Mason City the old fashioned way: they just went out and did the job and asked for nothing. Along the way and after, they say working with City Hall in Mason City has been frustrating and confusing.

Old Media bar public from attending candidate forums; Servantez won't attend
The Old Media (Globe Gazette, KIMT and Three Eagles Radio) is holding a "forum" for Mason City city council candidates at KIMT studios. NorthIowaToday.com is told there will be a forum for each of the three council contests prior to the November 8 elections. The public is not allowed to attend and ask questions to the candidates. One candidate, Sandy Servantez (pictured, above), is refusing to attend until her forum is held in a public place. "I will only attend if it is in a public place," she said.

Three Stars Plaza Project honors Holly, Valens, Richardson
CLEAR LAKE -- No, it's not a giant Wi-Fi transmitter.

But it will produce great music, if only for the time being in the minds of onlookers. The space-age-looking structure beaming in the new plaza near the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake is a monument to music legends Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, who died in a plane crash following a Feb. 3, 1959 show at the Surf.

It can be very traumatic when the family pet goes missing. Anyone who has ever had a pet can probably relate to the anxiety someone feels. If there are children involved it can be even more difficult to deal with. Kitten grievously injured in Mason City after after being thrown against wall
Mason City Police Officers were called to 18 14th Street NE on Wednesday, September 28th, around 5:00 p.m. for a report that kids were throwing a cat against a house. A neighbor said that the cat's spine was broken. The incident report stated that the officer confiscated the cats from the residence. Lisa Reich (pictured above holding a different cat), owner of the injured cat said, "It was nothing like that. The kittens had never been outside."

Fires extinguished in Clear Lake area Thursday
A grass fire was reported north of Clear Lake on 300th Street Thursday afternoon, likely fanned by high winds. The fire spread to a nearby salvage yard. Later, a second fire was reported when a combine caught fire and spread to the ground. Authorities put out both fires quickly.

Other local businesses coming forward seeking help, but will City deliver?
The City of Mason City has no formal written policy on awarding financial incentive packages to businesses, and now more business owners are coming forward seeking help. The good news is, there may be an "unwritten policy" available if you know the right people. City Councilman Don Nelson asked "When does it end?"

Supervisors hear road report, OK liquor license and election results
The Cerro Gordo County Supervisors met Tuesday morning and OK'd a liquor license for PM Park. They heard a road report from County Engineer Mary Kelly and canvassed the NIACC election. Watch video of meeting.

Attorney says Alliant's $500K threat groundless
Alliant Energy is holding a bill of over $500,000 that they say will come due if the Mason City City Council does not pass a "mutually beneficial" franchise agreement. According to a an attorney hired by the city, that bill is bogus and would never have to be paid by the city. United Sugars lockout continues in Mason City
Twenty-three workers at the American Crystal Sugar plant on Mason City's north side continue to be locked out of their jobs. It was said that American Crystal Sugar has brought in workers from outside the area, possibly from Minnesota, from a company that specializes in dealing with "strike" staffing".

Waste to energy plant proposed for Mason City's south side
At a North Iowa Landfill Board meeting Thursday night, investors presented a plan to build a waste to energy plant on Mason City's south side near the corner of South Pierce Avenue and 43rd Street. The plant would take about 250 tons of trash on average per day from the landfill and divert it to the plant where it would be sorted, gasified to produce a syngas and ultimately electricity. The plant would employ about 58 people if it moves forward.

Ohl was fired due to alleged rule violations and evaluation by psychologist
The Mason City Civil Service Commission heard testimony in a hearing Tuesday regarding fired police officer Maria Ohl. The purpose of the proceedings is ultimately to determine whether Ohl can have her job back as a Mason City Police Officer. Along the way, details about Ohl's accusations against the MCPD in the Jodi Husentruit case and another unsolved murder are being brought out. The hearing did not conclude Tuesday, and will pick up at 9 a.m. Friday. See photos and video of the hearing.

Source who gave Philpott information on Huisentruit disappearance died in April
On the eve of the Mason City Civil Service Commission hearing for Maria Ohl, NorthIowaToday.com has learned that the source who divulged information to Mason City Pastor Shane Philpott died last April. The Grand Opening for Clear Lake's new fire station is scheduled for Saturday, September 17 at 3:00 p.m. "We really, really appreciate the public support for their help," expressed Lt. Mike Meester. Four escape early morning house fire

Mason City shows off Historic Park Inn Hotel
Wright on the Park kicked off a week of events Monday with a picnic in Central Park. Tours of the newly-renovated Historic Park Inn Hotel were free to the public. Food, music and big crowds teamed with sunshine and a cool breeze to make the event a "big success" according to event organizers and volunteers.

Model airplane hobbyists to hold events
At one time, Ken Hanawalt, a Rockwell resident, had at least twenty-five remote controlled airplanes. His room was filled with the hobby he loved. Then, like the rest of us, he had to grow up and be responsible. The airplanes had to go; he exchanged his hobby to raise a family. Maybe, according to a now former Mason City Police officer. Maria Ohl, (pictured, above) who was dismissed August 4th from the Mason City Police Department, says she has information implicating Lt. Ron Vande Weerd, Lt. Frank Stearns and Bill Basler of the (DCI) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. She says "it will all come out now" and says she has no doubt that the truth will be revealed about what really happened to KIMT anchor woman Jodi Huisentruit. NIACOG gets $61,000 grant
Senator Tom Harkin announced last week that four Iowa regional planning commissions and councils of government received grants totaling $243,000. Locally, the North Iowa Area Council of Governments (NIACOG), located in Mason City, received $61,000. NIACOG's mission is to help put together a comprehensive economic development strategy for the 8 counties and 67 communities it serves.

School board explains choice of portable classrooms for eighth graders in Mason City
MASON CITY -- Students, parents and others got a chance Monday evening to walk through the new temporary classrooms where John Adams Middle School eighth-graders will be educated this year. Meanwhile, the Mason City School Board released a letter explaining why they elected to go with portable classrooms for eighth graders, at a cost of about $1 million. Photo gallery included.

After firing of 3 state civil rights workers, does closing Mason City's human rights office still seem like a good idea?
Three Iowa Civil Rights Commission investigators were recently fired for sending inappropriate emails to co-workers, NorthIowaToday.com was informed Thursday. If Mason City's Human Rights Department was ultimately closed, the state-level Iowa Civil Rights Commission, where the three fired workers are from, would have to pick up the slack for Mason City. NorthIowaToday.com asked local leaders if they thought that was a good idea.

The Annual Last-Day-of-the-Season Doggy Dip
Let's give a big round of allpaws to the staff of Friends of Mason City Dog Park for a successful turn out at the Annual "Doggy Dip." Wednesday evening at the Mason City Family Aquatic Center, families could bring their dog to the pool to relax, play fetch, float on rafts and do the doggy paddle. And boy, did they turn out. The Cerro Gordo County Supervisors OK'd a pay hike for precinct election officials. They also designated the election annex (pictured above) at 121 3rd Street SW as a polling place for Ward 2 and Precinct 1 elections.

Quilt shop leaves Mason City; no deal from City for them
On Highway 122 in Mason City, a large Willowbrook Mall sign prominently displays the statement "Quilt shop moved to St. Ansgar." Saintly Stitches, a fabric and quilt shop that was located in Willowbrook Mall, has closed its doors there. The store owner, Holly Schimmelpfennig, says City officials never approached her with a financial package to stay open in Mason City.
