Going beyond the press release

How NorthIowaToday.com began
NorthIowaToday.com was launched on October 1, 2010, by Matthew E. Marquardt of Mason City. Marquardt is a Mason City native, a graduate of Mason City High School and the University of Iowa.
The idea for NIT grew out of concerns about the future of local journalism and the decline of traditional local newspaper coverage. The goal from the beginning was to create a fast, accessible local news source focused on stories that matter to North Iowans.
Since then, NorthIowaToday.com has built an extensive archive of local and regional reporting while continuing to cover the people, institutions and events shaping North Iowa.
Our approach
NIT relies on public records, government documents, police and sheriff reports, court filings, public meetings, official statements, interviews and community information. The site also accepts news tips and story ideas from readers.
