MASON CITY – Around 9:15 pm Sunday evening, the Mason City Fire Department was dispatched to Casey’s at 1607 S. Federal for a vehicle fire.

At the location, smoke filled the night’s sky. The Fire Department had the flames out, but the van was still smoking.

“I’ve never scene so many flames coming out of vehicle,” said a witness.

“This is the mother of the owner,” said a lady standing nearby. “He just had it tuned up. It had to be electrical and of course, it would happen with a full tank of gas.”

The mother said, “I just dropped my son off at the bus station. He’s on his way to Mexico.” She seemed to still be in shock of what she just witnessed.

A Mason City Police officer informed them that the vehicle would have to be towed.

  1. I didn’t get to see this fire, so I don’t know how badly the van was burned. But usually, because todays vehicles have so many combustables built into them, it doesn’t take long,(minutes)for the vehicle to be engulfed in flames. Usually the vehicle is totally destroyed before the fire dept. gets there. Just wondering what shop it was that just tuned it up.
