Op-ed: Percentage pay increases are breaking the taxpayers! (by Otis Lewis)

Percentage pay raises are why taxes are so high.

It’s time the Cerro Gordo County Compensation board gets their act together. Percentage pay increases have got to be eliminated. Specific dollar amounts have to be the standard for pay increases.

In many cases public employees are now paid at a greater rate than private employees.

More importantly, percentage pay increases for Government/Public employees is the reason wages for those who are working for us in Government have become greater then the taxpayers paying their wages from the private sector. It never used to be that way and the reason is percentage pay increases. Private vs. Public pay scales have now been reversed thanks to the percentage pay increase.

Also the pay scales for Government Employees have become bloated at the top compared to the guy down at the bottom. Compare the wages of the Board of Supervisors, Treasure, Recorder, and Auditor to the Janitors and secretarial staff and you will really see how far out of balance they have become. I don’t have the figures in front of me but compare them from 20 years ago to today, and you will see a huge difference.

If it takes a law to change how public employees compensation is computed, then let’s create the law and get in on the books. Governmental Employee’s wages have become bloated compared to the Private Sector wages of the taxpayers paying them.

Tax burdens have become so great that we are getting to the point where we can’t afford you!
